How it is done properly
The order matters
Clean first
Lubing a dirty chain is worse than leaving it dry. Sand and old lube get worked inside and the chain turns into sandpaper. That is why every chain kit includes a cleaner.
Then lube
For the road, paraffin Chain Wax — it dries to a dry film, does not attract dust and does not fling onto the rim. For off-road, foaming Chain Guard — it works between the links and holds where water and mud take turns.
Protect last
SC1 on plastics and painted parts. Mud stops sticking and after a ride a hose is enough instead of scraping.
